pictures around the farm

Bees buzzing around the flower garden...

A blueberry pie I made a few weeks back.  I did cheat and use pre-made pie crust and dough...but when you make it from scratch it is way better.

Grandma's apples that we feed to the cows, but if there are any good ones she makes apple sauce and the best apple pie!

My uncle sheep shearing

Yet another picture of the lovely tomatoes that keeping popping up....

Our neighbor's pretty horses/ponies

raw

Eating raw food is starting to look better and better again. These past few days I have been eating less (mostly smoothies, milkshakes) and not a lot of heavy meat. I feel pretty good! However I still need to figure out why my hair is falling out.

dealing with toxic people

Here is an article I found (on www.fitfare.net). This morning I decided to clean my desk and the desk in front of me where other people come to do work. Then as I finishing up someone (not my boss) asks me why I am doing that and don't I have work to do. I tell them it needed to be cleaned and yes I do have work to do, don't they have their own work to do? They say well it is just odd I am doing that if I have work to do. Maybe that isn't toxic, but more passive aggressive. Or simply annoying!

I don't think people realize the stuff that comes out of their mouth sometimes. The thing I can not stand is people that direct negative comments your way and then the next minute are all laughing/joking. I think that is called an energy vampire. The trick is to not soak up all of their negative energy like a sponge. Stay far away!!

Anyhow here is the article by Angelmary Koola

Imagine a world where people were always pleasant and kind. Everyone helped one another, no one judged each other, and every relationship you have enhances your life. Unfortunately, the reality is not what John Lennon sang about in his song ‘Imagine’. In fact, the truth is, almost everyone has to deal with a toxic person in their life at one time or another. Whether is a family member, a co-worker, a boss, or even a friend, these people are the ones that end up causing you unnecessary stress.

Stress happens to be a major player in how your body operates. It is true that stress is needed for your body to function. However, excessive stress can cause your body to begin to move down an unhealthy road where diseases and illness start to take over.

For example, when you feel depressed about anything, you will feel that depression throughout your body. You will feel sluggish, lazy, tired, and generally under the weather. The stress from being depressed effects your eating habits and your lifestyle, in turn causing your body to work less efficiently. Whether it is an abusive spouse, a neglectful parent, a condescending boss, or a leech-type friend, the stress can become toxic to your health.

Recognizing toxic people
Who are these toxic people to watch out for? Toxic people are ultimately the people who cause you the most negative stress in your life. They are the people that make you feel unhappy, or spoil your mood purposely every chance they get. They are also the people who tend to be manipulative, deceiving and conniving. They could also be the ones that inadvertently cause you stress by harming themselves, for instance a family member that is a drug addict.

Sometimes toxic people are people you love very much like your children, parents or spouse. At times, it is hardest to distance yourself when you are actually related to the toxic person in your life.
Handling yourself around toxic people

First and foremost, keep it in the front of your mind that it is not at all selfish to change the way a toxic person affects you. Keep in mind that when you are stressed, your immune system becomes weaker. Therefore you are more prone to disease. Look at the following advice as a way to stay healthy, just like exercising or eating well.

1. If possible, let whatever toxic nonsense they spew go in one ear and out the other. Pretend to listen, but don’t really hear what they say or do altogether. If you are in a situation where you have to listen to someone, like your boss, then look below.

2. Kill them with kindness.
I know this is easier said than done. Sometimes your kindness can be taken advantage of, which might even make it worse. Other times though, if the toxic person is trying to break you down by saying rude things, they might realize it’s not worth the effort since it is no longer affecting you.

3. Do your best to be cautious and to avoid the person as much as possible. If you are at a party, occupy yourself with helping the host instead of being in the room with the other person.
If you are at a family function, be busy chatting with cousins so you don’t get a chance to see or hear the toxic person. This may not work with a boss at work, but can work with co-workers.

4. Focus on the good things you have in your life when you are around them.
This will make it difficult for them to penetrate and ruin your mood. Be happy to have a roof over your head, meals to eat, quality friends and family, and pretty soon the toxic person will have no affect on you. Any time they begin to wear down on you be thankful for what you have and realize they may lack many of the blessing you have in your life.

5. Realize that you should feel sorry for the toxic person.
They are not blessed with a good life and mind, which is why they spend their time ruining your day. When you begin to pity them, you will find that their misdeeds are minor.

simple things I love

To get the day started I like to enjoy a bowl of oatmeal with some honey for sweetness and a bit of hemp milk. Oatmeal is good for you and so much healthier than boxed cereal. And it sticks to my ribs and keeps me full until lunch time.

You can add dried fruit, fresh fruit, candied fruit (yep that's a lot of fruit) spices (cinnamon) and nuts for extra flavor.

old is new

This weekend I was poking around in the attic and found some nice J. Crew skirts that I can wear to work (there are lots of old clothes up there). I also found a pair of cute shoes I can wear to work, they are my sisters but she will no doubt say they are out of style by now. So it was like shopping but for free.

I think I paid for it on Sunday because I was sneezing up a storm. Either that or it was allergies. So I went to bed at the unheard of hour of 9:30 pm because I couldn't breathe that great. Although I did drink some ACV.

Today I am going to have my car checked out and see why it keeps overheating.

Happy Birthday Dad!

Happy Birthday Dad, he is only one year away from being 60. Today we had a potluck after meeting and then later on went to the diner for a birthday dinner. Except they always mess up Dad's order, it is bad luck or something. I mean it is every single time!

Some of his favorite things are surfing, spending time with his family, mowing the lawn (hahaha), trips back home to Hawaii, relaxing, dreaming of the day when he can retire (you know I had to throw that one in there).

economy

So...today the President has to talk to the nation and tell them no one has ever lost money that has been insured by the FDIC blah blah blah. That is not a very good sign.

inner harbor

I took the day off on Monday and we headed to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore to tool around. We spent most of our time at the Aquarium and saw all kinds of amazing fish, sharks, even an alligator. I took so many pictures but will try and post some later on today. Of course when you take a day off work it is so nice and you don't feel like going in the next day. But today we got bonus checks so I am happy to work here.

aapl

Apple stock has been down the last couple days so I bought some in hopes it will go back up to $200 a share. Last time I sold my apple stock it went up $100, what was I thinking...I should of kept it. Well that was a few years ago to say the least.

Also I bought some penny stocks for a dollar and unfortunately they tanked and have been only worth a penny a share since last December. Honestly I wonder if my stocks will even be worth anything when I am retirement age...or if the stock market will even be around. Just kidding, I mean I hope it is!

car cleaning

I just went and vacuumed out my car at a carwash place near my work. The vacuum at home kicked the bucket and I really wanted my car to be clean. There were three pennies on the ground, isn't that good luck?

Clutter everywhere adds extra stress and that is something I don't need right now. So I figure if my bedroom is clean that is good since it is the first thing I see when I open my eyes. Then my car should be clean since I spend sometimes 3 hours in it everyday just on the commute. Also at work I try to keep my desk organized, although right now it is piled full with work since I took the day off yesterday.

I know one day I will get it down!

sideways

Here is a recent picture of me. I don't know why but I look better sideways. My hawaiian name is Ka'iulani which means the highest point of heaven above the ocean. (That is what my mom and dad told me anyhow and my dad is hawaiian). I googled it and found heavenly waters, gift from the heavens, heavenly flower, royal sacred one.

I was just reading how sharing your heart openly, vulnerably and freely with another is the strongest and most courageous thing a person can do. I think it's true. Sometimes it takes people years to do this because most people have a problem being "real". I always try to be genuine (say what I mean and mean what I say). Well I hope I am not throwing too many cliches out there. But it is easier to be yourself rather than be what you think people want you to be.

Today I was feeling kind of bad about something that was said to me but it wasn't like that person was trying to be mean but somehow I still ended up feeling bad. But later I thought "the issue" wasn't even an issue and if they wouldn't of said anything it wouldn't have crossed my mind. Brother! Then I am wondering why am I even wasting my energy on this.

Anyhow tonight we had a yummy appetizer which is a bit of macadamia nuts, a dash of Jack Daniels, and brown sugar spread over brie cheese. You spread it on toasted bread after putting it in the oven to melt. So good! Then there was a huge spiral sliced ham, fontina scalloped potatoes, asparagus, jello, watermelon, corn on the cob and key lime pie.

Happy Birthday C!

Happy birthday to my younger sister C who has been living in Hawaii the past five years. Some of her favorite things are: surfing, photography, painting, creating new recipes, making gourmet cupcakes, something in New Zealand (haha), and vintage clothing.

We called and sang her happy birthday on her voicemail because she is in my cousin's wedding today on the Big Island.

happy Friday

Today I am working 1/2 a day and taking off on Monday. My brother & his family from NC and my relatives from Portland, OR are going to be visiting so we'll have lots to do. Also our county fair starts today so I'm sure we will have to check it out.

Here are some cute kitchen tools I have my eye on. Although I do love the color pink, having too many pink things in the kitchen might be a bit much. But you can never have too much Hello Kitty :) That middle picture is a kitchen sponge.
Well everyone have a lovely weekend!

sewing

Lately I have been thinking about getting a serger and starting a sewing business. I could hire my mom because she made a lot of our clothes growing up. My two younger sisters would probably die if they had to wear some of the clothes we did. There was nothing wrong with them, Mom made us jumpers and culottes and skirts and dresses. My sister told me I had no style the other day. Well if style means walking around with barely any clothing or undergarments, no thank you! I tried to tell her nicely that when she dresses like that she is asking for the wrong attention from guys. Anyways, I think my pencil skirts and bateau tops are just fine.

I'm glad to see more feminine clothing that has become available within the last 5-8 years. The only thing is that a lot of the skirts and dresses are uber short. Plus since I am almost 6' that turns it into a mini dress on me. I did find one solution which is at
http://www.vintagehem.com/ They make cute slips with lace or tulle on the bottom so it gives your dress or skirt extra length.

Maybe I should start a business for tall gals! I remember reading somewhere that it really only costs about $5 to manufacture a pair of blue jeans so when those designers sell them for $200 they are making a $195 profit.

more pie

Yesterday evening my little brother and I made banana bread and blueberry pie. We used a recipe from a Sesame Street book for the banana bread which used honey in place of sugar. After slathering butter on it I thought it was pretty good. Well I guess you will notice I am not eating all raw food anymore because here I am talking about all this non raw stuff. Anyhow I probably should go back to it to clear up my complexion.

Plus I made two batches of chili and used lots of fresh garden tomatoes. What can I say, I just love cooking and baking. When my sister opens her cupcake shop I told her I would help her out....until then I better practice my frosting skills.

from my garden

This is a picture of some of the produce from my garden. I actually took this picture in July. The yellow heirloom tomatoes are very sweet and taste pretty good as a snack. The best part about a garden is getting to pick the harvest. You forget about all those hours you toiled in the sun as you gather up the fruits of your labor.

hairdos

This is a feminine hairdo I like to do....kind of like a french twist/chignon except I prefer to have bits of hair hanging out. What are y'alls favorite hairstyles? I also like to straighten it and pull it back in a headband since my hair is naturally curly and pretty unruly.

When I was growing up my hair was pretty long, in fact I was looking at some old pictures and surprised that it was below my waist. But now when it reaches a certain length it gets stringy so right now I have it a little below my shoulders. I am always envious of the hula girls that have super long and thick hair. Maybe I need some protein pills or something, it is starting to fall out again...wait maybe I do have a thyroid problem. I found some website that is supposed to give you super long hair and they sell some kind of pill with a bazillion types of vitamins/minerals that are supposed to give you long hair.

hanna banana

The leftovers from Hurricane Hanna are supposed to hit us tomorrow with rain all day and 30 mph winds. On the radio they said we could experience power outages but hopefully we won't! It seems like everyone gets in a tizzy and runs off to the grocery store to strip the shelves. The last big storm knocked our power out for 3 days and of course we didn't have running water either since the well needs electricity to pump it up. It would be nice to have one of those old fashioned sinks that has a hand pump and then you pump out how much water you need.

I've been thinking about setting up a rain barrel water system on the farm with the house and all the barns. I mean that is quite a lot of water that could be collected.

a hairy situation

Ok the one thing I can't stand is when I am eating out and I find a hair in my food. I just got back from lunch and was halfway through eating a japanese rice bowl when I found a hair. I'm sorry but that just grosses me out.

I know it is probably a bad idea but I threw the rest away since I lost my appetite for the next ten years. This is another reason to pack a lunch or eat at home, you know what is going on with your food.

Happy Birthday J!

Today is my older sister's birthday, she is turning 30. Oh no...that means I am not too far behind! Some of her favorite things are: her husband, traveling, yoga, gardening, interior decorating, designer handbags (ha ha), being hospitable to the many guests that seem to be a constant flow to their house in Florida, good literature & healthy eating.

I believe it is about time for me to make another trip down there. Hmm what holidays are coming up? It would be nice to spend my birthday there at the beach.

farm omelette

One thing I have been eating nearly everyday for the past week is my "farm omelette". The ingredients that come from the farm or local market are: eggs, jalapenos, tomatoes, onions and scallions and the cheese is store bought. Just don't put in too many cut up pieces of jalapeno pepper or you'll be gulping down the water like I was last night.

I usually use 2 eggs per omelette, the time I used 4 I had to share with my sister because it's a lot to eat. Anyhow when it's dinner time it is nice to go out to the garden for a bit to pick the peppers and tomatoes, gather the eggs and then come inside and whip up this tasty recipe. It is even better if you have some type of meat (bacon, chicken, etc).

freezer burn

Oh dear...the last few days I have been freezing peaches in ziploc bags but when I went to check on them last night I noticed they all had some freezer burn. Man! The problem is I mixed them with sugar (no water) and did not have them completely covered in syrup so that is how they got freezer burn. Now I am wondering if I should de-thaw them enough to pour some sugar solution in or just leave them be. Hopefully I will find a canning pot and just can the rest.

This morning I went to feed the sheep and one of the lambs had died (I am in charge of the farm goings on while the family is in Hawaii). Mom says it is because they have worms or parasites in the pasture. I will have to research it but in the meantime find them a new pasture.

Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad

Today is Mammy and Pappy's anniversary, they have been married for 31 years. They are in Hawaii right now because my Grandma's funeral was on Sunday. No need for any gifts, I mean you can't top a trip to Hawaii ha ha. I will have to look around for one of their wedding pictures.

duck pen

Right now I am researching an easy to build duck pen. I know someone that has an old wooden playhouse so I might try and convert it. That would be easier than hammering nails all day and trying to construct something by myself. Since the ducks do not follow anyone when it is time to put them away for the night I have to spend a half hour chasing them down!

Last night I managed to freeze a few bags of peaches. Grandma informed me that she didn't know if she had her big canning pot so I decided to freeze some in the meantime. Seems like no one sells those canning pots anymore. I tried Walmart, Big Lots, grocery stores, Home Depot...it has to be at least a 21 qt pot because that is what the rack I bought will fit in.
